PWC Survey: Berlin is Ready for the Future

High Quality of Life in the German Capital

While Berlin is no match for cities like London, Beijing or New York in terms of economic clout, having to settle for 22nd place, it scored high in terms of livability. Indeed, Berlin made it into the top 5 in all rankings involving the quality of life for residents. For instance, the city not only has a well-developed public transportation infrastructure, but also lets residents find high-quality housing within a comparatively short period of time. Moreover, Berlin ranked high in terms of recreational opportunity: The city is an El Dorado for culture aficionados, offering a rich spectrum that includes anything from vaudeville and cabaret to concerts and literary events – something for every one. In this respect, the city is outdone only by New York, Paris, and London, according to PWC. It also got good grades for its health system and its elderly care. As far as waste recycling goes, the city actually maintained its lead by a clear margin. Then again, it takes a back seat when it comes to climate: The authors of the survey found Berlin winters exceedingly harsh.

Berlin has Plenty to Potential for Improvement

Berlin received its first commendation by PWC three years ago when it chose the city to take the place of Frankfurt am Main, at the time the only German city included in the survey. The political and cultural clout of the German capital outweighed the economic prominence of Frankfurt. In the years since, Berlin made steady gains: Having started out at rank 16 in 2012, the city moved up to rank 12 a year later, and continued the trend in the latest ranking by finishing 11th overall – and this even though the number of cities included in the survey was expanded. The authors of the survey acknowledged though that Berlin has room for improvement, especially in regard to its economic clout. To raise this potential, Berlin should keep strengthening its fortes in the areas of research and creativity.
