Location

Rostock began to expand rapidly after the onset of the industrialisation, and crossed the mark of 100,000 residents in 1935, making it officially a major city. The Hansaviertel locality with its popu-lation of roughly 8,500 counts among the smaller sub-districts of the Hanseatic city. The quarter’s centre piece it the well-known Ostseestadium of 1954, the first stadium built after the war in the young East German state. In August 2001, a modern new football stadium with a capacity of up to 30,000 spectators opened right next to the old stadium. It is home to the local Bundesliga club, FC Hansa Rostock, and regularly hosts its matches, but also serves as event and concert venue.

 

From Soester Strasse, the stadium lies within easy reach, the same being true for the teaching hospital of the University of Rostock, several sports training facilities and the track & field stadi-um. Indeed, the club house of FC Hansa Rostock is located directly on Soester Strasse. A five-minute walk from the multi-unit dwelling at Soester Strasse 5 takes you to the "Holbeinplatz" rap-id transit station and bus stop or to the tram stop "Holbeinplatz," with service connections to all other areas of Rostock. Walking down Karl-Marx-Strasse will take you to the hip quarter of Kröpe-liner-Tor-Vorstadt in the historic town centre in less than ten minutes.

 

With its many high-street shopping venues, its great public transport links and its proximity to the university, the Hansaviertel neighbourhood is ideally suited for families, employees of the nearby hospital or for the campus community. Nearby lies Barnstorfer Wald, a popular local recreational area whose parklands lie in direct proximity to the beautiful zoo of Rostock.
