This part of town with its population of roughly 19,000 residents lies west of the medieval town core and south of the Unterwarnow section of the river. It owes its name to Rostock’s historic main western city gate, Kröpeliner Tor.

Take, for instance, the cinema on the edge of the Hansaviertel quarter, the Rostocker Volkstheather playhouse between Doberaner Platz and Kapuzenhof, and a street colloquially called "Kö": Kröpeliner Strasse, the city’s high street in the heart of the historic town centre, runs from Kröpeliner Tor to the Neuer Markt square.


There are numerous small cafés, bistros and restaurants in the vicinity, along with day-care centres, schools and supermarkets.
